Daily Blog - August 4, 2026

Daily Summary - if you can’t do more just do this.

Classical Mechanics

On Yoob Toob

I watched some more of the lectures on classical mechanics while doing the dishes and making food today. He went over the same stuff Goldstein started on, fleshing out the framework of classical mechanics: $\vec{r}$, $\vec{v}$, $\vec{a}$, $m$, etc. One really cool thing he did though, was looked at the “Aristotlian mechanics” in some detail. By this, I mean a system where the first law is $F=m\vec{v}$! So I want to go over that and see what the reults of it might be.

So if we start with

$$ \vec{F}=m\vec{v} \\ \frac{d\vec{r}}{dt} = \frac{\vec{F}}{m} $$

We can try separation of variables and integrate, assuming constant $\vec{F}$:

$$ \int_{r_0}^r d\vec{r} = \int_{t_0}^t \frac{\vec{F}}{m} dt \\ \vec{r} - \vec{r_0} = \frac{F}{m} (t - t_0) \\ \vec{r} = \frac{\vec{F}}{m} (t - t_0) + \vec{r_0} $$

So this is interesting. It tells us that under a constant force, a particle moves linearly over time. This makes sense if we don’t know anything about Gravity. Think about it like this, when you push something you “impart” velocity upon it. If I push an air cart, if we ignore any external forces like friction, it keeps going at the speed I pushed it to forever. It get weird when we try to add another direction, though. When we throw a ball, it doesn’t linearly fly off in the y direction. It moves up, then down again. Parabolic. So this doesn’t match up with reality. Another issue becomes apparent when we don’t use a constant force. Let’s use a force that depends on position (like a spring!). Let’s make it linear in x because springs are, too.

$$ \frac{d\vec{r}}{dt} = \frac{-k}{m} \vec{r} $$

This one is easily solvable: What function is its own derivative? Yup. Euler’s special little child

$$ \vec{r} = \rm{e}^{-\frac{k}{m}t} $$

This says that the motion of a spring should give us an exponentially decaying function. When you let go of the spring under these rules, it compresses more and more and more over time. Luckily we have Newtonian mechanics to save the day!

Goldstein

Inspired by that lecture, I decided to read some Goldstein as well. I finished up on the bit about multiple particle systems’ linear momentum and moved into angular momentum. I finished right after angular momentum, and look forward to working on work next time! tee hee.

3d printing update

So, I’ve finally decided upon which 3d printer I want to make. It’s the mulbot and it’s the most modern and 3d-printed of the lot I’ve seen. Which is exactly what I’m looking for.
