Daily Blog - August 2, 2026
Today I didn’t really record anything. I did a lot, though! I managed to take all my medicines, which is a habit I’ve been trying to make. After that I made chicken sandwiches while washing some dishes. While I was, I put on a video about Classical Mechanics on Youtube.
Classical Mechanics
The video discussed a couple interesting things. Since it’s day 1, it’s not gotten very far. He starts with as simple of a system he can think of: a coin sitting on a table. It’s heads up, and never changes. So there’s only one state in that system. Pretty boring. He then described a system with two states! This coin can FLIP. So for any “time step” you would flip the coin. The system now looks like

A 2 state system. A time step in this system happens when the coin switches from one state to the next, and the states can only go from one to the other.
We can then define a function to define that system, the equations of motion within that system.
$$ \sigma(t) = \begin{cases} &1 &: &\text{if heads} \\ &-1 &: &\text{if tails} \end{cases} $$Then for each time step, $\sigma$ changes, so we express that
$$ \sigma(t+1) = -1 * \sigma(t) $$and to see how sigma changes with time (after choosing an initial condition
of heads:
And we could go forward and figure out all the “physics” of such a system. We could, say, add a third state, or add some cycles, even extend it to infinite states. You don’t need infinite particles for infinite states: one particle along the X axis does just fine. We’ll see that if a state cycles, or doesn’t “change” over time, then it’s what’s known as conservative. This is about when I finished and had to turn the video off. I’ll do more later!
Reading Goldstein
So after this, I got a bit overexcited and picked up Classical Mechanics by Goldstein, Stefko, and Poole. It’s a book that’s been on my to read list for a very long time now, so I’m glad I’m motivated to read it. So far, it’s been pretty basic. Just definitions and mathematical framework. I ended up at the Work-Energy stuff in chapter 1. I plan to keep reading, and keep recording it on the blog.
